Our Trail Tale

Based on a recommendation from our OWL community, we decided to embark on the Indian Joe Creek Trail. With multiple trail options available, we opted for a 'counter-clockwise' route, entering the Canyon View trail, then proceeding to the Indian Joe Creek Trail before circling back through Hayfield Road.

The journey commences with a charming bridge and early access to Alameda Creek. While swimming is prohibited, this area offers breathtaking views. You can pause at multiple spots to observe and listen to the river, making it an ideal spot for a revisit at the end, as the trail forms a loop.

As we continued left onto the Indian Joe Creek trail, we encountered a surprising sight - a large male tarantula right on the path! As seen in the picture below, these males are actively searching for mates and are abundant in the Bay Area. Despite their intimidating appearance, tarantulas are harmless and timid. Should you encounter one, please be respectful!

After approximately two miles, we reached a captivating outcropping of rocks. This area is a must-explore! Here, you'll find talus caves - openings formed between stacked boulders - promising a thrilling adventure. This place bears a striking resemblance to a miniature Pinnacles National Park, hence our name for it - 'Little Pinnacles!'

As we returned toward Hayfield Road, the trail opened up to reveal impressive views. There's a watering hole where cattle often gather before you come across JB Ranch. This historic ranch, now owned by EBRPD, features an old barn, though you can admire it from the outside only. Multiple picnic tables provide a welcome spot for a break. Finally, head down the hill and return to your car or make one last stop at Alameda Creek.

We absolutely loved this trail and believe that, considering the variety of destinations and features it offers, it's a must-visit for anyone looking for outdoor activities near them in the East Bay. Let us know in the comments if you plan to take this hike or if you have any questions!

As always, we hope to see you outside!
